Word from Boomer

Hi Carl Blarl,

I think you distilled it down to the main problem on the groups, the division of talent is between the creative and authoritarian. Authority folk should probably chill out a bit more, maybe not realizing how most people are constantly subjected to authority and just want to participate in a fun hobby play some cool tunes and tell others with the same interest in low volt radio about their stations. There are creative ways to be authoritarian that don't come off so crushing to the soul.

It seems logical to me, people would be into this hobby for a 'light' version of radio, or hobbyists going their own way, doing radio on their own terms, that's why they'd choose to use their skills in Part-15 over being at a licensed radio station.

I wanted to let you know about a possible frequency source for your LPB transmitter. There are a few generic frequency generator circuits available on the market that could be used, but this guy is targeting older AM transmitters as a crystal replacement with his circuit, and mentions LPB units by name.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Mediumwave-AM-Broadcast-Phase-Locked-Loop-Carrier-Generator-Board/264554384845

I don't know this seller and haven't communicated with them, but from what I read in the documentation, he has a handle on the issues with older transmitters.

Your website has been working fine for days now, and I like the page you have this time. The blog is using a presentation I've thought to try myself, having the newest posts at the bottom of the page instead of stacking them at the top, which is a blog standard.

I've thought about doing that before, and maybe have anchor links at the top of the page of a longer blog, so that browsers could zip right down to a particular week of posts and read them. I like the text size now too, the older blog got zoomed up and the text wouldn't stay set at a medium size between visits, and I'd have to zoom out again using the View part of the Firefox browser.

Boomer, Doggin' it out

Imagine if the centuries old book standard of starting on page 1 and ending on the last page was reversed to read from end to start to match the internet standard of putting the most recent words at the beginning. We would have "old books" from pre-internet and "new books" for the cyber age. Some of us would have motion sickness and be worried of losing our breakfast.

Boomer submits: Book 'em, Carl!

Radio station CARL, Canada,

Not just books, think of a regular diary or journal, the analog equivalent to a blog, those are written chronologically too, like the "old books." Journalists just changed things on the web, where 'freshness' of information and immediacy became more important and because of the the supposed pain of having to scroll. It also could be easier to post when your web editor opens and it starts at the top of the page.

I think pages can get too long, and having new entries at the top can help in the case of the really long page. Maybe a book format would work, a cover page with an index of chapters, as you've had, going by the month and year.

As for 'flea power', licensed stations running low power at night, signals can get out because the antennas are full size for one thing, and that a little power can go a long way. That was well known in the early days of broadcast radio when stations were a few watts and covered towns, and also were heard in other states.

In a world that prizes being 'green' these days and saving resources, I think low power stations should be allowed again, with town-size signal ranges of a few miles. I always thought it would be a good idea for each town to be able to have a radio station, with an antenna on the city hall, and lots of connections with the library, teaching things, reading books, and public info.

Instead, networks of large commercial enterprises invented their form of mass media, and then worked to do away with low power radio stations, through minimum power rules.

Flea power has been used in my area on AM radio. After it was approved that stations could have smaller versions of themselves at night, I'd hear local school sports play by play, and one station had a DJ at night, at least for a short time. The few I hear now run stripped down versions of their daytime programming, music, or if running a syndicated feed, they continue with whatever they were doing.

Carl Remits: We crossed out the names of the boring politicians and wrote BOOMER for Presidential Candidate!
Yes, in fact even now the minimum permitted daytime power for AM radio in the U.S. is 250 Watts, and I think I know a frequency.

The public library in Louisville, Kentucky, once held two FM licenses; one classical the other jazz.

New York City still has a licensed station: WNYC AM & FM

All the books in my personal library begin on the first page.

Some people believe that AIDS was designed to eliminate gays. Now we have COVID19 believed by some to be a euthanasia virus targeting old people. And wasn't there something concocted to do away with people of color? Maybe an illegal alien potion is being developed? "Medicine" for Muslims?

Observation About Commercial Radio
From Tha Dood
Hmmmmmmmm... Doing a band scan of other stations locally where I am today, normally Sunday is filled with various sports programming on the commercial stations, but not this Sunday. Mostly paid, (Infomercial-like.), programming to fill the on-air void. My stations??? This weekend I'm running the month long accumulated podcasts from programmers like Radio Survivor, Radio Dan Show, Amateur Radio Newsline, Life Underground, etc. So, this could be a boost for Part #15 and LPFM stations. Passing thoughts there...

The Boomer Report

Hi Karl DX,

Website (kdxradio.com) is still working fine, and speedy, even on an older computer. I like that, some sites are loaded with gadgets and take more than a few seconds to load up, or the scrolling is stiff. We thought better computers would make sites load instantly, but it's like an arms race, we get better, and they fight back with more code on the pages, and some sites even use our PCs for distributed computing with Bitcoin.

I don't know if my town is calm, people supposedly bought out toilet paper and alcohol sanitizer, but I will bark that it is quiet here at least. The wind is blowing and it reminds me of Vincent Price's movie Last Man On Earth, a zombie movie, that does have a Dog, as a symbol of life.

At least there's some movement on the P-15 groups again, with a new station, WIMP Radio entering the herd.

A Clear Look from a Clean Window

KDX Worldround Radio has found its time as people have suddenly taken an interest in being informed about the world around them. Until now KDX has been a minority of one being the only progressive talk station in the esoteric class of low power radio stations broadcasting from home basements and bedrooms but overnight we've been thrust into a work-at-home society speaking information as intimate voices at a safe distance; immediate reports from quarantine.

Hours of "going live" have been expanded during the KDX program day as we now carry Fault Lines with Garland Nixon & Lee Stranahan, 6 to 9 AM CDT; The Thom Hartmann Program 11 AM to 2 PM CDT; Loud and Clear with Brian Becker & John Kiriakou, 3 to 5 PM; and The Critical Hour with Dr. Wilmer Leon at 5 PM. All of these programs provide continual reports and updates on current developments with input from expert spokes-people and frequent listener comment.

The International Voice of KDX streams from KDX-OGG at kdxradio.com and hyper-local transmission sends out at 89.9 MHZ from a C.Crane FM2 transmitter to the near reaches of our campus.

God's Plan: Outline for a Science-Supernatural Semi-Fiction by Carl Blare

A wounded earth sends clear hints that human activity is causing injurious harm to its ecosystem. Warning Messages take the form of violent weather events, horrific wildfires, rising seas, droughts, famines, nuclear incidents, mass extinctions and predictable disasters in the near future but it all proves too subtle and humanity fails to apply course corrections.

The planet shifts to a "no more nice guy" stance and aims a targeted Coronavirus to innoculate itself against further human contamination.

Islands Among Streams

All the cars are parked while the world streams in busy exploration of film titles, of which we have two to share, both about broadcasting.

Swing State is a radio movie about a low paid liberal rock jock who gets an abrupt and unexpected assignment to sub for the right-wing conservative hate host down the hall and does so well that he soon gets promoted to national syndication.

Weather Girl opens as a TV weather woman stages an on camera melt-down because the anchor man jilted her in favor of a new affair with his younger sexier co-host.

Having enjoyed several decades in radio and TV I may have witnessed a few things that would substantiate such story-lines, but I'm bound by a perpetual non-disclosure clause, unwritten as it may be, issued by myself as a professional courtesy for the many companies I've worked for over those years. Oh ya, companies and their employees have all kinds of laundry they'd prefer to conceal, and maybe so do you. The most I can do is brag that I know what's under-the-carpet, so to speak, but, in priestly style the seal of the confessional cannot be violated.

In any case the two movies can be found on YouTube.

A word from Artisan Radio About the Enemy Domestic

Stupidity

Throughout the Covid crisis, the world has seen the best and the worst
in our leaders and people.

The best - leaders such as Canada's Trudeau or France's Macron.

The worst - leaders such as Trump, who is placing his reelection
prospects ahead of potentially tens of thousands of lives by pushing to
end social distancing in favor of the economy.

I just read a poll which had the approval for Trump's handling of the
virus outbreak at 60%.

I guess it's really true that most Americans are stupid (present company
excluded).  Obviously a large part of Trump's base (elderly white
people) don't realize that they have the loaded gun pointed squarely at
themselves.

People are in the habit of life but cannot visualize death because they've never experienced it and don't know what to expect.
This is the kind of time when people trust their hopes to fraudsters both political and religious.

Wednesday March 25, 2020 11:10 AM CDT
Artisan Radio published a brilliant message at part15.org, reprinted here:

There’s a new movement afoot.

In Italy, Spain, and now Canada, at a specific time each day (7PM here in the Vancouver, BC, Canada area), people come out on their balconies, into their yards and onto the streets to cheer Covid first responders and those on the front lines – healthcare workers, police, firefighters, essential workers.

This would be a great way to plug your Part 15 station into the community everyone says they want to serve.  Forget about moronic politicians, and recognize who and what really matters.

I’m in the process of creating a track that consists of sirens, as well as people cheering and clapping, and will be scheduling it to play every 7pm on Artisan Radio.

It may be a small gesture.  But if there’s one thing that we’re learning, we’re all in this together.

Artisan's message mirrors a thought I have... the part 15 (low power) stations we've been mingling with for years have been repeating the same hit music recalled from childhood while kidding themselves that this serves the community. Now, with the world plunging into devastation, they still dig in and continue to present the same old same old. It occurs to me that now would actrually be a good time to truly serve the community. KDX does so with 24-hours of continuous global coverage of the pandemic and economy. Maybe some of the others will "come to".

Memorial to Ourselves

There are a trail of symphonies left incomplete by composer deaths, much the way lives now are ending without their planned completion.
We are here amidst our own extinction trying not to be convinced that the game is over.
Anton Bruckner knew his time was short when composing his Ninth Symphony, expressing to his doctor, "Now I dedicate my last work to the majesty of all majesties, the beloved God, and hope that he will give me so much time to complete the same." But God was Anton's virus leaving the Fourth (final) Movement undone.
This Symphony is a blueprint for the Coronavirus Pandemic. This performance under the baton of Gunter Wand is a masterpiece of detail.
